During the eruption at the famous volcano Eyjafjallajokull in Iceland I took more than 2000 photos. I visited the area five times under different circumstances. I probably spent more than 40 hours on this “project”. Drove and parked my vehicle at a spot by Þórólfsfell west of the volcano, walked up to Morinzheiði, drove my 38 inch Nissan Navara over the glazier Mýrdalsjokull and drove through the toxic dust, all in name of my hobby. It was a lot of fun and an interesting time and a rear opportunity for e armature photographer.
Of all the photos I took I think this one is the most interesting. It is rare in a sense that not many photographers captured this motive or similar moment. It shows how extremely powerful the eruption was. If you can see the small rocs flying in the powerful path of the dust coming up, they are a size of a small SUV. After I posted it on Flickr I was contacted by few people and companies that wanted to use them on websites and in printed material. Among others an airline company in Rumania, Carpatair.
I am adding a few photos from my eruption collection from Eyjafjallajokull to give you all a sense of what was going on. Hope you all enjoy and comments are appreciated.
Eruption at night. At that moment I experienced some of the strangest sounds coming from the volcano. I was only about three kilometers from the carder.
Driving through the dust from the volcano was an experience. It was toxic, unhealthy both for me and the Navara, my truck. We both survived.
And then again it was fascinating, fantastic, spectacular and once in a lifetime experience. How fantastic is this and actually standing nearby.
Driving on the glacier is a danger but fascinating at the same time.
Farming was difficult while the eruption at Eyjafjallajokull lasted. It took its toll as you might expect.
But somehow there is always beauty in everything. Even in live threatening situations an things tend to get better.
Hope you all enjoy - Einar Pall
